The origins of the Squad Car Nationals date back to 2001 when the first competition was held in Fayette, Alabama, organized by Kenneth Junkin. This inaugural event was dedicated to the memory of the late NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, Sr., an avid Andy Griffith fan. The organizing sponsors were the “Hearty Eating Men and Delicate Beautiful Women” chapter of the TAGSRWC, the Fayette Quarterback Club, and the worldwide organization of TAGSRWC. Granville welcomes Ken Junkin and honors him at the opening ceremony on April 11 at 10 AM. Ken, not only organized this initial event that brought together fans and collectors of the iconic Mayberry squad car but is also a highly acclaimed Otis tribute artist. The squad car, specifically a Ford Galaxie, has become an enduring symbol of the show and a cherished piece of television history.

Since its inception, the Squad Car Nationals has grown in popularity, attracting participants and spectators from across the country. The event has become a beloved tradition, providing an opportunity for fans to relive the charm and simplicity of Mayberry while showcasing their meticulously restored squad cars.

The National Squad Car Obstacle Course competition takes place on Clover Street, beginning in front of Sutton General Store at 1:30 PM on Saturday, April 12.
