1700's Item Found Near Granville on Exhibit at TN State Museum

Log Canoe TN State Museum

This dugout canoe, one of only two known to exist in Tennessee, was pulled from the Cumberland River at Holleman's Bend, near present day Granville in Jackson County, in the late 1700's.

Made from a single yellow poplar tree harvested on near by Canoe Hill, it remained in the same family and was preserved by using it as a feeding trough for farm animals.

Acquired through a purchase donation from John Sisk and Dennis Burgess, 1991.
